The function of your roof’s underlayment is just as important as the shingles attached to it. The underlayment serves as a secondary barrier against the weather in case some shingles get dislodged. Read on as the roof replacement experts at Cantrell Roofing, LLC, elaborate more on the underlayment’s function and shares tips on picking the right kind below.
The Function of the Underlayment
In the event your roof is damaged, the underlayment can protect wooden decking (the base of your roof) from the elements until repairs can be done. The underlayment also shields your decking from harsh chemicals used in shingles, which can melt under the heat of the sun. Keep in mind, however, that not all kinds of underlayment can give the same level of protection.
3 Types of Underlayment
There are three different kinds of underlayment: asphalt-saturated felt, non-bitumen synthetic underlayment and rubberized asphalt underlayment. Listed below are the advantages of each type:
- Asphalt-saturated felt underlayment – This kind of underlayment is manufactured by saturating felt paper with asphalt to waterproof it. Of the three, this is the most affordable option. Asphalt-saturated felt underlayment usually comes in 15-pound and 30-pound varieties. Thirty-pound asphalt-saturated felt is stiffer, but it’s less vulnerable to damage during roof installation.
- Non-bitumen synthetic underlayment – This kind of underlayment is more water-resistant than asphalt-saturated felt underlayment, which is also why most roof repair contractors prefer to use it.
- Rubberized asphalt underlayment – This is the most expensive option, but it also has the most benefits. Rubberized asphalt underlayment is completely waterproof thanks to its protective membrane, which has a high percentage of asphalt and rubber polymer, and an adhesive underside.
Of course, roofing underlayment won’t be able to protect your roof if it isn’t installed properly, which is why you should only hire certified contractors.
